Mumoba.

Adapting to dynamic experiences and needs.

Designing for Specific Users

Project 1

The University of Twente.

The Assignment

In this design project a group was tasked with designing a product for a  post-partum participant in order to help alleviate pain points or enhances certain experiences in her life. The group achieved this through in person interviews, co design sessions and iterative design processes. At the end of the project the group aimed to design a product that made a positive impact on our user's life.

Video presentation

Designed with versatility and organization in mind, Mumoba seamlessly adapts to your needs. Watch the video below to see how it works and revolutionize the way you manage both work and motherhood.

Meet Maria.

Maria is the assigned case owner for the project. She has recently had a baby. She is very enthusiastic and she loves everything that maternity has to offer.

Note: Maria is an annonymous name chosen to represent the case owner. The client's identity remains private.

Active

Maria lives an active lifestyle as she rides everyday to work and also finds time to go to the gym to keep fit.

Positive

Throughout the entire journey of motherhood and discussions around the topic Maria demonstrated a positive and excited attitude

New Mother

Maria is experiencing raising a child for the first time so she is constantly learning and adapting.

Stress Free

Throughout all interactions with Maria it was evident that Maria is extremely resilient, patient and free going.

The Product.

Just like the dynamic experience of maternity, the bag can change to fit various needs and use scenarious. It can be mounted to a bike, a pram, or carried like a backpack. Each individual compartment can be utilised on their own,  providing flexibility.

Multiple Mounting Configurations.

The two straps on the top corners of bag allow it to be mounted to a pram.

The bag can be attached to a bicycle with four elasticated velcro straps.

Separate Detachable Breast Pumping / Cooler Bag.

The detachable cooler bag is optimised to be used to carry pumping supplies. Later it can be used as a lunchbox.

Modular Adaptability.

The attatchment panel contains a grid of magnetic locks, allowing the bag to be configured in various ways.

Sanitary Mat for all motherly moments.

Due to the participant's hygiene concerns when pumping in public bathrooms, the pumping bag contains multi-purpose sanitary mat for drying.

Explanation of Components:

This compartment is the closest one to the body and presents an ergonomic design. This compartment includes a protective laptop sleeve. This works in favor of weight distribution, by placing such heavy items close to the body. The back compartment comes with two detachable straps, a handle on the top, two straps which can be hooked to the pram, 4 straps on the back which functions as attaching part to the bike. The straps are detachable so that they can be placed around the other side of the backpack during the travel with the bike, such that they will not interfere with the tyres and ensure a safe ride. The straps located on the back are elastic and ensure a safe attachment, especially given the participant’s bike. They tie and secure around the bike rack leaving the back horizontally.

Back Compartment.

This is the most capacious and is thought to carry all other work related items, such as lunchbox, water, books, notebooks, and all the other necessary things. The inside presents some further compartments to ensure a proper organization inside the backpack and save space.

Middle Compartment.
Attachment Panel.

This rigid structure allows the backpack to work as such an efficient modular system. The panel is covered by a number of magnetic snap fasteners which ensure the attachment of the smaller compartments to the bag. This panel does not necessarily attach to the middle compartment only, but thanks to a system of zippers, it can also attach directly to the back compartment, leaving the middle compartment out if its purpose is not necessary for that situation.

Pumping/ Cooler Bag.

The pumping bag is the first of the smaller compartments, and nothing less than another fundamental part of the bag, because it links the product to one of the bigger concerns for the mother, breastfeeding in a working environment. In order to solve what were some of the most addressed pain points of the participant, the team developed a compartment which could include the pump, the milk cups to store the pumped milk and a sanitary drying mat which could help out the mother during the process of cleaning the tools after pumping in the toilet and in hygienic conditions. The whole bag is a cooling bag: it includes the space for an ice pack in order to maintain the milk fresh throughout the day. By consisting in a relatively small compartment, the bag can be used individually: by its aesthetic design, the participant can fulfill the wish of being able to carry the pumping bag for even more formal occasions than just work. Also the detachability of this specific section from the whole bag was another wish of the mother in terms of practicality when breast pumping at work.

Smaller Compartments.

All the small compartments can be used individually as shoulder bags. They are interchangeable and the user can arrange them as needed for any specific occasion. Thanks to the magnetic Fidlock fasteners placed in the back, they can be easily attached to the snap connected to the attaching panel, allowing the participant to make use of a secure but at the same time user friendly solution.

Crossbody Strap.

The system also contains a strap that can be clipped on to any one of the modular bags, allowing them to be used individually.

Even though the bag was designated for Maria, the modular system appeared to be suitable to many users depending on the organization of its compartments. The flexibility of Mumoba can also be noticed by how the bag can fit the different phases of the mother, especially in such a dynamic period of her life, and grow alongside the mother, the baby, and their necessities.

Using The Product.

Design Process.

Exploration and Contextualisation.

Phase 1 of the project entailed the first contact and interview with the client, the gathering of both primary and secondary research and the identification of multiple design opportunities.

Ideation and Concept Definition.

Phase 2 of the project involved further research into design opportunities and multiple co-design sessions with the user. This allowed the group to pin point the design challenge.

Prototyping and Testing.

With their concept set the group begins to create their prototype for their given user. Throughout this stage, the group make

multiple mock-ups and employ their textile skills to bring their idea into reality.
